Historical Design

Zesty Historical Design

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works

Steve Jobs

The art of Historical Design is fascinating. Fortunately I have a genuine passion for history and its preservation and have been designing interpretive and historical signage, print and digital items for many years. The key to a quality design is remaining sensitive to the elements and historical story while keeping its context respectfully. Historical design is very much a passion of mine and I’ve worked with many local groups, communities and organisations to deliver contemporary yet appropriate design services and stories.

Murray Darling Junction Interpretive sign

The design of the Murray Darling Junction Interpretive sign was a real joy and honour! The previous sign had been long standing and tired. It is Australia’s Murray Darling Heartland and we had to design a sign that worked with the new branding while fitting into the existing signage frame. The front utilises one of my aerial photos to show the river’s converging and the reverse of the sign has interpretive information about the significance of the river’s and the junction. Wentworth Region Postcards

Working with the Wentworth Visitor Information Centre, Brand Action designed some great postcards that incorporate the Wentworth Region branding. The cards include a historic print of the Wentworth and the Darling Rivers from the 1800s.

Brand Action also did some drone photography to include with the aerial confluence of the Murray Darling Rivers photo. This project included print management on 300gsm cast coated board ready for sale to visitors.

Mannum Heritage Walks

End of the River Trade Interpretive Display Mannum Museum

The Mannum Dock Museum of River History approached Brand Action to design an interpretive display depicting the end of the river trade.

Using a combination of supplied resources of newspaper, photos and stories, we designed a panel as a story of the last trip by a paddle steamer. We also supplied illustrations from black and white concept to give life to the display.

The background kept in them with other elements of wood, steel etc with the use of a wool bale material texture to both add mood and emotion to the design.

PS Marion 20 Year Recommissioning Poster

My passion for the Murray River and its heritage is wide known. The PS Marion is a beautiful paddle steamer having photographed for a very long time I designed this 20 Year Recommissioning Poster with a range of my images I’d shot over the years. Through the typography in the middle was the use of historical images showing the PS Marion in its glory!

Loveday Internment Camp series

Working with the Berri Barmera Council, I produced a fully edited, narrated 4 part series on the Loveday Internment Camp. The establishment of the camp from 1941-1946 was a important part of Australia’s history and the Riverland, South Australia. The diversity of cultures in the camp were significant. Editing the video and graphic design then the final DVD production. It’s a wonderful, digital look at the Camps history, way of life and impact during the war.

Morgan Happee Trail

Having worked with the Morgan and Cadell community and tourism for many years allowed me to see opportunities to help the communities grow tourism brand through improved branding resources, communication and education.

Designing this Morgan Happee Trail is a hertiage walk around Morgan. Still one of the best preserved river towns on the Murray today. I still support the visitmorgan.com.au website and developing new trails, walks, business support brings me great reward.

River of Honour

Discover Murray River War Trail (VIC, NSW, SA)

The Murray River region across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia contains a vast range of War Memorials to honour the fallen and those that sacrificed themselves for Australia as well as highlight various wartime activities.

This Discover Murray River War Trail aims to assist and educate those travelling our great river region to connect with the stories of the those communities who acknowledge their fallen and showcase some of the wonderful experiences, museums and monuments you can experience that preserve and protect the legacy of our diggers for the future. The ‘Very Good Water’ Rock sign

The Friends of the Coorong approached me to design a very simple interpretive sign 600x900mm for a historic ‘Very Good Water’ rock in the Coorong. The brief was based on Parks SA colours and styles so the design was very simple using some old images that need to be retouched and improved for higher resolution printing onto ACM. Kokoda

In 2010 with some friends we trekked the Kokoda Track. It was tough, real tough but also one of the most amazing experiences of my life… To walk in the footsteps of our Aussie Diggers who sacrificed themselves to protect Australia is truly profound with gratitude. I recorded the trek on video to keep the story and showcase this special experience. See more photos >
